What does it mean to be an Eco-Lighthouse?
Eco-Lighthouse is a recognised national environmental certification that provides businesses with tools to systematically work on sustainability. Eco-Lighthouse sets environmental and HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) requirements for companies that wish to certify themselves, which go beyond the minimum requirements that businesses are legally obliged to follow. This is because Eco-Lighthouse companies should be proactive, take responsibility for sustainability, and inspire improvement. For Deepinsight, this means continuously improving our performance in areas such as work environment, waste management, energy use, procurement, and transport. Our commitment through the Eco-Lighthouse certification means we actively work to reduce our climate footprint and strive for a more sustainable future.
Why is Eco-Lighthouse important to us?
"Being an Eco-Lighthouse company goes hand in hand with our vision of ‘building a sustainable healthcare system through mathematics and code.’ It’s about having a positive impact on society in everything we do,” says Karoline Fauskanger Andersen, Office & HR Manager and Deepinsight’s Eco-Lighthouse responsible person.
The certification helps us systematise our environmental work, contributes to continuous improvement, and ensures that the work is prioritised. In this way, we can be more transparent about our environmental goals and actions and ensure that we follow up in an effective manner that truly delivers results. For Deepinsight, it is not just a formality; it is part of our corporate social responsibility. Additionally, an Eco-Lighthouse certification helps meet the expectations and documentation requirements that are often required in, for example, tender processes.
Karoline explains that even before we became an Eco-Lighthouse company, Deepinsight had been focusing on environmental and climate initiatives, largely driven by dedicated individuals within the company. For us, becoming an Eco-Lighthouse has had the greatest impact on our HSE work. For Deepinsight, the focus on work environment and culture has been especially educational and inspiring, and we have gained a much better understanding of how important this work truly is. After all, the people behind the company are our most important resource!
Cultural and educational work
"We are committed to living by our values and making ethical choices as a business. We, therefore, continuously work on building a culture that reflects our values. An important part of being an Eco-Lighthouse is cultural work, where this mindset is followed and maintained," Karoline emphasises.
Being an Eco-Lighthouse, therefore, is not just about concrete measures, but about promoting a culture where sustainable choices are a natural part of employees’ everyday lives. Karoline believes that many people want to make better choices but often lack the knowledge to establish good habits.
"Everyday life is full of choices made on autopilot. By engaging in educational work and inspiring each other to adopt good, environmentally friendly habits at work, we also raise awareness in general. This better equips people to evaluate the choices they make both in and out of the workplace, and this, in turn, can spread to influence friends, family, and others."
Our initiatives and ambitions
In our work as an Eco-Lighthouse, we have both commitments and voluntary initiatives. We have established a dedicated environmental group that meets regularly to discuss ideas and ensure progress in our work.
Specific initiatives and routines we wish to highlight:
- Routines to reduce food waste and recycle waste at the office
- Used furniture: We are committed to reusing resources and buying used furniture instead of new ones when it is a good alternative. Buying used is not complicated, whether you need a single lamp or 20 identical office chairs; there are more and more actors in the market, and some of them specialise solely in the purchase and sale, including transport, of larger quantities of office furniture. - Beach cleaning day
- Regular anonymous employee surveys to gauge the company's atmosphere and identify what we are good at and where there is room for improvement.
- Environment Day for the entire company:
- Input meeting/updates from environmental work
- Environmental quiz
- Collection, review, and return of electronic waste (both from our operations and employees are encouraged to clear out at home and bring waste to the office)
- Clean Out Your Computer initiative, which aims to limit unnecessary data storage by cleaning up apps, programs, files, emails, etc.
"As a responsible company, we are aware of our role in society. We see our environmental work as part of a larger community effort, where we, together with other actors, contribute to sustainable development. It’s a motivating factor that strengthens our work with the Eco-Lighthouse certification," says Karoline.
